Fog clears as Sun shines

LUCKNOW: The political temperature in the state shot up with the announcement of dates forassembly elections, but the mercury level dropped to freezing level in some parts of west UP, intensifying the coldwave conditions.
Najibabad in Bijnor was shivering at 0.5 degrees Celsius minimum temperature, while Muzaffarnagar recorded 0.6 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has not predicted any relief for Sunday. In fact, Christmas could be the coldest day of this winter in terms of minimum temperature.
The city was comparatively better at 5.6 degrees Celsius minimum temperature, one degree below normal. The maximum temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Though night temperature dropped, the bright sunshine kept people warm and provided relief from the foggy conditions.
The state Met department has predicted further drop in minimum temperature on Sunday. There would be no significant change in the conditions for next 2-5 days. Met officials said dry icy northwesterly winds have led to drop in the minimum temperatures. Since the wind speed is high and moisture content low, fog formation is less and it's getting cleared easily during the day.
The absence of thick fog, as seen last week, and icy winds have led to drop in the night temperatures. The dense fog cover makes day colder as it restricts penetration of sunrays, but the temperatures are above normal at night as fog prevents heat from the ground to escape into the atmosphere.
Met office said west and central UP were colder than east, terai and Bundelkhand. In west UP, the minimum temperature in Agra was 2.8 degrees Celsius, Moradabad 3.2 degrees Celsius and Meerut 5.2 degrees Celsius.
In east UP, the minimum temperature in Gorakhpur was 5.2 degrees Celsius, Kanpur 7.1 degrees Celsius, Allahabad 8.6 degrees Celsius and Varanasi 8.3 degrees Celsius. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in the state for next 2-3 days. Foggy conditions in morning hours will continue.
Bright sunshine brought respite from coldwave in many parts of the state but nine more deaths due to cold and dense fog were reported in the past 24 hours taking the toll to 83. Three people each died in Hardoi and Jaunpur, two in Azamgarh and one in Barabanki.

FIR lodged against Facebook, journalist

LUCKNOW: An FIR was lodged at Gomtinagar police station against Facebook and a Chandigarh-based editor of daily for posting obscene remarks on Hindu Gods and Goddess besides giving a call to burn Bhagwat Gitadescribing the holy book as anti-women.

Social activist Nutan Thakur lodged FIR under section 153, 153 A, 153-B, 290, 504, 505, 506 IPC and section 66 A Information Technology Act 2000 against one C I Chumber, resident of Jalandhar (Punjab), Facebook Inc. and others.

According to the FIR, Facebook social networking site is seen and shown all across the country through internet. C I Chumber, who identifies himself as editor-in-chief of a Punjabi daily newspaper, has posted remarks asking people to burn the Bhagwat Gita because in chapter nine women have been referred as' pap yoni ' (bad origin) which he says is against the Indian constitution which gives her equal status like the men. He cites examples from Russiaand says that the same shall be followed in India. He also uses open abuses and dirty words against many revered Hindu Gods and Goddesses including Lord Krishna and God Brahma.

Thakur said that use of such language can cause riots and amounts to promoting enmity between communities, doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmon, imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration, public nuisance, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace , criminal intimidation and using Information Technology for the above said purpose.

Earlier, Thakur's husband Amitabh, an IPS officer, had lodged FIR against a group called "i hate Gandhi". She had also lodged FIR in Meerut against by my husband Amitabh Thakur and at Civil Lines (Meerut) against Facebook and others for putting obscene stuff on Hindu Gods.

She said that despite repeated complaints no suitable action has been taken by the police so far. "Facebook Inc, Headquartered at Pao Alto, California, USA has also been made an accused for having provided the requisite platform for dissemination of all these information, particularly when they had been overlooking such information despite repeated requests by many", she added.

Plea to freeze elephant as BSP symbol dismissed

NAGPUR: The Delhi high court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by representatives ofInternational Organisation for Animal Protection(OIPA) seeking direction to ban use of national heritage animal 'elephant' as party symbol by theBahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Naresh Kadyan, the petitioner and Indiarepresentative of OIPA, affiliated to the United Nations, duly recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), wanted the court to issue directions to chief election commissioner (CEC) to freeze or replace the symbol of the BSP from elephant to other.
The petitioner also wanted respondent - ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) - to make guidelines and rules for the national heritage animal to protect them from any kind of abuse, unnecessary pain and suffering.
"The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) although imposed a ban on display of elephants, it failed to rescue them. The BSP was abusing national heritage animal elephant during elections by using it live in the party rallies and hence it should be withdrawn as party symbol," said Kadyan.
But, dismissing the writ petition for a ban on elephant as BSP's election symbol, the Delhi high court said, "Elephant does not come under the National Emblems Act (NEA) and hence the writ petition is dismissed." The NEA prevents improper use of certain emblems of government, said Rajender Yadav, counsel for the petitioner.
Kadyan said that under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, elephants are protected under Schedule I, and hence use of any protected wild animals and their trophies is an offence.
He alleged that BSP candidates use live elephants for parade and campaign and also in victory rallies. Recently, a BSP MP had booked elephants for pride during marriage celebration inMeerut. Due to abuse, the animals went out of control and damaged public property. Same elephants were later rescued and rehabilitated by the authorities.
Similarly, Kadyan said, in 2008, a BSP candidate booked two elephants for campaigning. Besides, elephant is being displayed symbolically on statues in parks along with statues of late Kanshiram and Mayawati. This is being done to gain popularity.
"We will appeal in the Supreme Court against the high court order," Kadyan stated.
