Fog clears as Sun shines

LUCKNOW: The political temperature in the state shot up with the announcement of dates forassembly elections, but the mercury level dropped to freezing level in some parts of west UP, intensifying the coldwave conditions.
Najibabad in Bijnor was shivering at 0.5 degrees Celsius minimum temperature, while Muzaffarnagar recorded 0.6 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has not predicted any relief for Sunday. In fact, Christmas could be the coldest day of this winter in terms of minimum temperature.
The city was comparatively better at 5.6 degrees Celsius minimum temperature, one degree below normal. The maximum temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Though night temperature dropped, the bright sunshine kept people warm and provided relief from the foggy conditions.
The state Met department has predicted further drop in minimum temperature on Sunday. There would be no significant change in the conditions for next 2-5 days. Met officials said dry icy northwesterly winds have led to drop in the minimum temperatures. Since the wind speed is high and moisture content low, fog formation is less and it's getting cleared easily during the day.
The absence of thick fog, as seen last week, and icy winds have led to drop in the night temperatures. The dense fog cover makes day colder as it restricts penetration of sunrays, but the temperatures are above normal at night as fog prevents heat from the ground to escape into the atmosphere.
Met office said west and central UP were colder than east, terai and Bundelkhand. In west UP, the minimum temperature in Agra was 2.8 degrees Celsius, Moradabad 3.2 degrees Celsius and Meerut 5.2 degrees Celsius.
In east UP, the minimum temperature in Gorakhpur was 5.2 degrees Celsius, Kanpur 7.1 degrees Celsius, Allahabad 8.6 degrees Celsius and Varanasi 8.3 degrees Celsius. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in the state for next 2-3 days. Foggy conditions in morning hours will continue.
Bright sunshine brought respite from coldwave in many parts of the state but nine more deaths due to cold and dense fog were reported in the past 24 hours taking the toll to 83. Three people each died in Hardoi and Jaunpur, two in Azamgarh and one in Barabanki.
